Moms, no need to feel guilty if your baby has a nappy rash. Nappy rash is very common and can happen no matter how carefully you look after your baby’s bottom. Know that almost all children who wear nappies, suffer from nappy rash at some point. We know how uncomfortable and sore it can be, with your baby’s bottom all red, irritated and inflamed.
What causes nappy rash? The first and main cause of nappy rash, is that your baby may have worn the nappy too long. Babies skin is very sensitive, much more so than adults. Urine contains ammonia and stool contain digestive enzymes. This, combined with friction, and prolonged dampness, is very irritating to your baby’s skin. Plastic pants often make nappy rash far worse, because the plastic prohibits the air from circulating properly, and keep the nappy area damp. The prolonged wetness causes irritation, which is followed by inflammation.
Please also be careful with the kind of soaps that you use to wash your baby’s cloth nappies. Harsher soaps and detergents are not intended for use with such very sensitive skin, and if left on cloth nappies after washing can also contribute to nappy rash. We highly recommend Purity & Elizabeth Anne’s Baby Laundry Wash – it gently cleans and softens your baby’s laundry, wash after wash. Tough on stains where you need it to be, yet kind on skin. This product is colourant and chlorine free.
Thirdly, sometimes babies have a skin condition such as eczema, psoriasis, thrush or impetigo, which might make nappy rash worse. If this is the case, please obtain a doctor’s advice and follow it accordingly with your baby.
On the positive side, nappy rash is usually fairly easy to treat, and should clear up within a week. There are creams that can be used, such as Sudocrem and Bepanthen, that functions as a protective layer between your baby’s skin and the nappy, and the creams also balances the skin’s PH, bringing much-needed relief. Purity & Elizabeth Anne’s essentials baby cornstarch powder is talc free & hyper absorbent and also helps prevent chafing and nappy rash.
